Vehicle Transfer in Guatemala

In Guatemala, currently there are two ways To transfer a vehicle:

1. In person at the SAT.
2. Before an Lawyer and Notary Public Guatemalan authorized by SAT to perform Electronic transfers.

In the first case, it should be taken into account that the process can be a bit cumbersome and tedious, as long lines must be formed before the SAT.

However, currently, electronic transfer allows you to complete your transfer in a matter of minutes in front of a notary.

The Lawyer and Notary is empowered to carry out the electronic transfer and, in the same act, delivers all the documents that support the transfer to you.

In other words, at that very moment you leave the Notary's office with the transfer completely executed, and you won't need to do any extra paperwork or stand in long lines at SAT.

Electronic transfer.

It is important to mention that although electronic transfer considerably facilitates the process, it is necessary to comply with certain requirements, expenses, and take into account some aspects that are detailed below.

Requirements and Documents Needed for Electronic Transfer.

• On the electronic transfer day, both the buyer and seller must be present.
• Original certificate of ownership.
• Original circulation card.
• Original and photocopy of the buyer's and seller's Ids (individual person); if it is a legal entity, the legal representative's appointment will be necessary.
• The buyer and seller must be solvent in paying their taxes, they must not have outstanding vehicle payments or outstanding tax returns, and they must be current with their circulation tax.

Expenses

• SAT-8028 Form Q60 (electronically generated at the time)
• Q120 of form SAT-1186 (electronically generated at the time)
• Fees at the discretion of the notary public hired.

Taxes

VAT payment depends on the vehicle model according to the following

• Q1,000.00 for models two to three years prior to the current year.
• Q500.00 for models four or more years older than the current year.

Documents to be submitted

Once the transfer is finalized, the notary will hand over the following at the same time:

1. Certificate of Ownership (Title)
2. Vehicle registration with the new owner's details
3. Electronic decal.
